The third "hero" had to assume what the herald called the "natural position", bending way forwards (not shown on this image) while holding a burning candle and blowing into a horn. At the same time, the herald tasted the soup for poison and explained how to eat the soup. The soup was served in a hollowed-out rye roll, and on this image, you may be able to see that the top of the rye roll could be taken off. The roll was then supposed to be taken in both hands, with the pinkies pointing outwards, and lifted towards the mouth to drink from the roll.

Sorry, but there were no spoons for soup in the middle ages!
